Plastic Problem

  • Plastic production is continuously increasing
  • PE-LD plastic film production is over 130 000 000 t/a
  • Recycling rate is poor
  • The fossil carbon emissions from plastic films are more than savings from electric vehicles
  • Micro-plastics originating from fossil plastics will stay in the food chain and may end up to human organs

Our Solution

Bio-based polymer + wood fibers

The new patented composite of wood fibers and bio-based polymer composition enables unique strength properties, water resistance and flexibility for the material.

Produced with paper machine

The bio-based composite can be produced with ordinary paper or board machine. The water removal is easy and production is fast. The required basis weight of the composite sheet is significantly lower than paper sheet or plastic based film.

Recyclable and biodegradable

The products can be recycled with paper or with carton board. The material is repulpable in recycled fiber processing. Biodegrability means that polymers are broken back to safe natural substances in water and in soil.

Projects

Piloting project will demonstrate sustainable carrier bags

Grocery stores are selling  plastic carrier  bags that uses plastic that has been recycled only once. This causes high carbon foot print and high risk for micro-plastic pollution. Our new solution is to replace plastic carrier bags with light-weight, durable, bio-based composite bags. The new bags are lighter than paper bags. The new products will be tested in pilot scale.

Research project focuses on packaging products

In our every-day life, there are so many plastic products , which could be replaced by the composite products. Some packages are made from wood fibers, but still coated with non-biodegradable plastic film. Our composite material allows convertings:  coating, calendering, printing, heat sealing, folding, and even thermoforming.
